With fresh energy and perspective, Chrysalis, the DIBID’s new maintenance partner rolled out a massive districtwide street cleanup effort on October 30. A downtown-based non-profit, Chrysalis provides job training and placement for low-income and/or formally homeless individuals. Chrysalis gained its deep understanding of what it takes to keep the downtown streets clean as the maintenance partner for five other downtown LA BIDs and 17 districts city-wide.
The Industrial District has its own distinct challenges as the only BID with 2,000 permanently unsheltered individuals occupying on its sidewalks and other public spaces. As a result, our maintenance contractor removes an average of about 300 bags, or more than four tons of trash per day from sidewalks, gutters and trash cans, volume that has been rising steadily throughout the year. As well, we clean up illegal dumping of food and clothing particularly acute during the holidays, remove graffiti from business frontages and public signage. And now our most requested service is on-demand sidewalk power washing, particularly critical early in the morning when businesses request our help to stem the spread of sanitation threats from bodily fluids.
As shown in the accompanying photos Chrysalis is already hard at work tackling the most onerous trash found anywhere, with the immediate impact the clean-ups can have.
You will see Chrysalis team members in their DIBID black shirts, yellow vests and gloves throughout the District Mondays through Saturdays, doing their best to keep a massive trash issue from posing a problem for our businesses. Should you need such maintenance assistance, call our dispatch desk at 213-228-8484, ext. 210 to reach the Clean Team.
